'Cetacean fetishism' - that hits the spot. It's incredible what myths and quasi-religious sentiments have grown up around these animals. As a conservationist, a British Columbian (birthplace of Greenpeace, etc etc.), it was heartening to see a defence of sustainable whaling and the right of rural peoples to support themselves without undue deference to Euro-American pieties.
